General Information about Sasan Gir / Gir National Park

Approximately 330 kms from Ahmedabad,t he only home of the endangered mighty Asiatic Lion. Sprawling over an immense expanse of 1412 square KM of thick woods. In 1965, Gir forest was titled as wildlife sanctuary and in 1975 it was declared as a National Park.it is the common house of the lion – the only other spot outside of Africa where you get the opportunity to encounter the wild cats in their normal living space. Take in the experience by exploring everything from the 250 types of twittering birds shooting out of the thick shade of trees overhead, to the crocodiles in the swamp waters. The National park houses around 38 species of mammals, 300 avifauna species, 37 species of reptiles and over 2000 insect species. Enjoy jeep safari and bird watching at Sasan Gir. Gir is one of the biggest habitats for the lions and leopards. A great place for the wildlife safari. Wildlife Safaris in the deep woods of Gir not only offers the great vistas of the wildlife, but the perennial and seasonal water bodies add an extra perk to the experience of wildlife expedition. Kamleshwar Dam located within the premises of national park is a home to reptiles and crocodiles which are also a major attraction of Gir. Apart from the leopards and lions, the national park also houses the various variety of species such as Deer, Sambhar, Cheetal, antelopes, blue bull, jackal, hyena and hare among the other species of fauna. Trekking as well as a ride on a jeep safari are two of the most popular activities out here. Perfect place for wildlife lovers and photographers.

The national park is open to visitors all throughout the year except the monsoon months, between June and October. But the best time to visit Gir National Park is in the winter season, from November to March. During this time, the weather is cool and the chances of sighting animals are greater.


Connectivity :

By Rail : Sasan Gir has its own railway station, which is not well-connected with the main cities of the country. The best is to catch a train to Junagadh or Rajkot and take a taxi to Gir from the railway station.

By Air : The nearest airport to Gir National Park is Keshod, which lies approx 38 km away from Gir. From the airport, the best way to reach Gir is by hiring a private taxi. You can also find a bus from Keshod to Gir.

By Road : Gir is well-connected with the roads with the nearby cities. Direct buses run from Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Dwarka, Rajkot, Surat etc to Junagadh from where you need to take a cab to Gir. Gir forests can be reached easily by roads through buses, cars or taxis from Diu (110 Km), Junagadh (55 Km), Rajkot (160 Km), Veraval (40 Km) and Ahmedabad (408 Km).

 

Gir has a number of resorts and lodges that serve food across various cuisines. These ensure that you won't run out of options for food while on your trip through adventure and excitement. Since it's a part of Gujarat, you might find local and elaborate Gujarati cuisine being served here. Typically vegetarian, Gujarati Thali would consist of Roti, Dal or Kadhi, Rice and Vegetable Curries. Gujarat is a dry state, so you wouldn't find any alcohol here.


An Ideal Itinerary ;

Day 1 - Arrive at Keshod airport or Junagadh railway station. Transfer to resort in the Gir National park. Check-in at the hotel. Spend the rest of the day at the resort.
Day 2 - Leave for wildlife excursion in the National park. Enjoy the wildlife safari. In the evening enjoy the bird watching. Back to the resort. Dinner at the resort. Overnight stay at the resort with a bonfire and other cultural programmes.
