General Information about Corbett-Jimcorbett

Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India established in 1936 with a view to protect the endangered Bengal tiger. Located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand, it was named after famous British naturalist Jim Corbett who was famous for hunting a large number of man-eating tigers and leopards in India. Spread over an area of 500sq.km, the landscape of Corbett National Park comprises of grasslands, hills, lake, marshlands and river belt.
Corbett is an ecotourism destination frequented by nature lovers who come here from various parts of the world to experience the diverse flora and fauna of the region. Forest covers almost 73% of the Corbett National Park and 10% of the area consists of grasslands. It houses around 110 tree species, 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species and 25 reptile species.

The wildlife population of the park mainly consists of elephants, tigers, leopards, panthers, jungle cats, jackals, Himalayan black bears, blue bulls, sloth bears, spotted deer, barking deer, hog deer, sambars, langurs, antelopes, porcupines, otters, Indian grey mongoose, Himalayan palm civets, hares, Gharials (fish eating crocodiles), Mugger crocodiles, tortoise, turtles, cobras, pythons, monitor lizards, wild boars, pangolins, palm squirrels, long-eared hedgehog, rhesus macaques, cat snakes, wolf snakes and many more.

Connectivity :

By Rail : Ramnagar is the nearest railhead from Corbett and is connected to major destinations such as Delhi, Haridwar, Lucknow etc.

By Air : Patanagar airport is the nearest domestic airport about 50 km away from the town. A taxi can be hired from the airport to reach Corbett. The nearest International airport is IGI airport in New Delhi which is about 235 km from Corbett.

By Road : Corbett is situated at a distance of 235 km away from Delhi and you can drive and it takes about 6 to 8 hrs drive by car or cab. Corbett is also well connected by bus via Ramnagar from Delhi, Haridwar and Nainital.

The Hotels offer rich and delicious North Indian, Chinese, Mughlai, Continental, Kumaoni and local cuisine. Don't miss the Chicken, Kebab and other barbeque delicacies here. However, non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited inside the park. The local cuisine offers a number of delicacies with Bhaang Ki Khatai, Kappa (a green curry), Sisunak Saag(a dish prepared with green leafy vegetables and many local ingredients), Aloo ke Gutke( a Kumauni potato dish), Rus ( a preparation of many dals) being just some of the popular items here.

An Ideal Itinerary

Jim Corbett being a national park, won't have a particular itinerary. One can take two days to explore the national park, and at the end of the first day, plan a night stay at Dhikala zone to make it an affair to remember. Plan the elephant ride and the jeep ride for your friends and family and roam around the beautiful national park, depicting the beauty and diversity of life in the country.

Few Places of Interest :

The main attraction to visit the National park are the wide varieties of safari rides including elephant safari, jeep safari and so on. Jim Corbett National Park is the best place to explore implausible wildlife of India. To protect the wildlife, Corbett is divided into various Tourist Zones where visitors can go on a wildlife safari and see the wildlife with bare eyes at proximity.

Bijrani Safari Zone : Bijrani Zone has abundant natural beauty and open grasslands and is very popular amongst tourists. The entry gate of the zone is located at only 01 Km from Ramnagar city.
Jhirna Safari Zone : Jhirna Gate is located at 16 km from Ramnagar city and is an important tourist zone in the Jim Corbett National park that is open for tourist round the year.
Dhela Safari Zone : Located at an approximate distance of 13 kms from Ramnagar is the Dhela Safari Zone and has a wealthy flora and fauna and is open to toursists throughout the year.
Dhikala Zone : Dhikala is famous for its abundant natural beauty as well as offering the best sight for exotic fauna. The entry gate is 18 km away from Ramnagar city. For the hardcore wildlife enthusiast, a night stay inside Dhikala Tourism Zone is highly recommended. It is the largest and most varied zone in Corbett,

Durga Devi Zone : This zone is located on the north-eastern boundary of the Jim Corbett National Park and is a heaven on planet earth for tourists fond of bird watching. The eEntry gate is located at an approximate distance of 36 km from Ramnagar city.
Sitabani Buffer Zone : Sitabani Zone doesn't fall under the Corbett Tiger Reserve area, however, it is highly recommended for tourists who are fond of serene ambiance of the natural beauty
