General Information about Kihim

Kihim is a small village located to the north of Alibaug, It is a great weekend getaway and is accessible via Road and Water. Kihim at just 12 Kms from the Alibaug bus depot is amongst the most popular beaches in Alibaug. The beach at Kihim has soft fine sand and is predominantly a black sand beach with a slightly more coarser white sand covering. The northern part of the beach has a rocky stretch and the southern end of the beach is a long stretch of sandy beach however you might find some rocks strewn across the beach and one needs to be careful if you plan to take a dip in the sea at Kihim. Kihim beach is one amongst the most popular Alibaug beaches with a long stretch of sandy beach & rocky stretches. The Khanderi and Underi forts looms over the horizon at the Kihim beach and along with the rocky stretches offers one of the most beautiful views of the setting sun in this part of the konkan beaches. Every year during the month of Shravan, a shivling mysteriously appears on the Kihim beach drawing hundreds of devotees to see the 'swayambhu' shivling that appears year after year just to vanish again to reappear the next year! Ferry is the most convenient and to a extend an economic mode of transport to Kihim from Pune and even from Mumbai. The Kihim beach itself is the primary attraction in Kihim apart from the Kunkeshwar temple nearby. If you are traveling with kids you might also take a look at pedal boats in the boating 'club' in the pond towards your left just as you enter the rustic village of Kihim. There are food stalls near the beach selling 'chat' and snacks near the parking area.


Kihim does not have a train station, and the nearest station is Panvel, at a distance of 41 kms from Kihim. Famous for the Kihim Beach, Kihim is well connected to Pune by road and train. However, the best way to reach Kihim from Pune is by road, a journey of about 2 hours by car. The places covered between Pune and Kihim are Pune - 47 km -> Khamshet - 29 km -> Khopoli - 34 km -> Pen - 29 km -> Kihim. On the way, there are several ATMs, Hospitals, rest stops and dhabas. Eating joints such as Cafe Punjab and Sher E Punjab are present on the route. Petrol pumps of Hindustan Petroleum (HP) and Indian Oil, among others, are also available at regular intervals.
