General Information about Mussoorie

Set on a horseshoe-shaped ridge 6,600 feet above sea level in the Garhwal foothills of the Himalayas in Uttaranchal, the delightful town of Mussoorie is a medley of sensations. It’s where exuberant tourists rub shoulders with adventurous trekkers headed for the Himalayas and pious pilgrims on their way to the holy sites of Gangotri and Jamnotri. Titled as “Queen of Hills”, Mussoorie is one of the popular hill stations in India. The Mall is the centre point of Mussoorie with its two ends- Library and Picture Palace spread some distance away. In Mussoorie, you will find both nature at work with beautiful waterfalls and sceneries as well as architectural marvel of colonial structures. Mussoorie is a place that should be explored by walking. The entire place has wide beautiful roads with a magnificent view of the valley on one side, on the other side there are shops and in between, there are fountains and trees with wooden benches. You have to walk by all these shops by yourself as each shop offers unique wooden handicraft, accessories, woollens and much more. Also at constant intervals there small vendors who sell delicious corns, momos, sweet corn, Maggie, coffee, eggs and much more. The weather there is pleasant throughout the day so walking does not tire you.

By Train : The Dehradun railway station is the nearest railway station to Mussoorie. It is located around 60 kilometers away from Dehradun. You can take bus/taxi service from railhead to Mussoorie.

By Air : The Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport from Mussoorie. It is located around 60 kilometers away from Mussoorie. Taxi services are available between Jolly Grant Airport and Mussoorie.

By Road : The National Highway number 58 connects Delhi and Mussoorie. The journey via car/taxi cab will take around 5 hours and 23 minutes. Excellent bus services are available between Mussoorie and other major cities in India.


One finds Chinese, Tibetan, Indian, Thai, Moroccan, Italian, Goan and global cuisines in the town. Do indulge in the cakes, muffins as well as the many cafes and a few hookah bars here. The Tibetan food is said to be the most mouth-watering and gets much limelight, so be sure to not miss the Momos here. The local cuisine of Uttarakhand that you might find here consists of Bhaang Ki Khatai, Kappa (a green curry), Sisunak Saag(a dish prepared with green leafy vegetables and many local ingredients), Aloo ke Gutke( a Kumauni potato dish), Rus ( a preparation of many dals) and much more.

 

An Ideal Itinerary ;

Day 1 - When you reach Mussoorie and check in to a hotel do not get cosy and sleep off. Get fresh and find your way to Lovely Omelet to get the taste of the amazing and famous cheese omelette. After that, you can spend the day exploring the various shops that follow your path and find many attractive things there to buy. From time to time, you will find small games like crossbow shooting and dart guns to burst balloons on your way. You can buy the variety of woollens the place has to offer.
Day 2 - After a healthy breakfast go to the cable car to reach to gun hill. After that, you can either take a rickshaw or walk your way to the Garden. The place has an amazing variety of flowers and plants. Also, it has a wax museum with statues of many popular celebrities and a small lake for your boating pleasure. You can also wear a traditional dress there and get amazing pictures clicked. There you can have lunch and then go to Kempty falls. This place is for those who love to play with water. After that return to your hotel for hot coffee and enjoy the beautiful view of Dehradun valley at night. From mall road, you can see the entire valley lit up.
Day 3 - You can go to the highest point in Mussoorie that is Lal Tibba. The place has a beautiful view and also is famous for Chaar Dukaan, a place specially meant for tourists to enjoy delicious cuisine. From there you can go to Mussoorie Lake for a picnic or adventure sports. You can also go to Sir George Everests house to climb a small hill that gifts you an amazing view. Apart from these places, the restaurants in Mussoorie are also very good. Kalsang is famous for Tibetan food, Chic Chocolate corner for the perfect café feeling and food and Little Lama Café for an amazing roof top experience.

 


Few Places of Interest :

Mullingar House
The oldest building in Mussoorie, was the home of an Irishman called Captain Young from Mullingar, who commanded the first Gurkha battalion here. According to popular lore, the ghost of Captain Young visits his home on moonlit nights.

Lal Tibba
Lal Tibba, the highest peak in Mussoorie at 7,510 feet, is a restricted area because of the presence of the Indian Military there. Lower down, in Mussoorie town, you can find the schools and settlements of Tibetans who fled after the Chinese took over their homeland.
Untouched by commercialization, Lal Tibba is located on the highest hill of Mussoorie. It is famous for the travelers who wish to encounter the large view of mountain trails. Kedarnath, Baderpunch, Badrinath and many other beautiful places can be spotted via telescope from Lal Tibba. Visit either at the time of sunrise or at the time of sunset.

It is located in the Landour Area on the Depot Hill. In the form of a small terrace, it gives you great memories with mesmerizing views of Tibet border. The place is relaxing and has remains of British Architecture. The clear view it offers is soothing to eyes. It brings together the blue sky and lush green terrains in front of our eyes.

The place around serves as a base camp for Indian Military. It has broadcasting towers of Doordarshan and All India Radio as well.
It is located 5 km from Mussoorie. The roads to Lal Tibba are small, and hence it's better if you take a private car from Mussoorie to reach your destination.


Lake Mist
The place is ideal for spending the moments of repose with your family and friends. The pristine lake is among the most beautiful destinations in the Queen of Hills i.e. Mussoorie. The emerald waters are covered by green forest terrains from sides giving the whole scenario a resplendent image.

It comes on the way to Kempty Falls. It feels great to spend time with the serenity of nature's bliss. It is one of the most beautiful things to be seen in Mussoorie. Another plus point is that the place is less crowded hence you can enjoy the calmness in the laps of nature. It is a gem of attraction.

A perfect location for boating. To promote tourism, accommodations have been made along the lakeside providing you with best services at your beck and call. The lake oozes beauty on its every turn. Amidst the peaceful surroundings, you can have an amazing experience of exploring every corner of the lake by way of boating. Lake Mist is located on Mussoorie-Kempty road and hence can be easily reached by locally hired taxis or buses.


Kempty Falls
Kempty Falls is situated about 15 km from the popular hill station Mussoorie. However, vehicles are allowed only up to a certain point after which the journey has to be made on foot. Located on the way between Dehradun-Mussoorie roads, Kempty Falls is a beautiful cascade of water that falls to the ground from a mighty altitude of 40 feet. Surrounded by high mountain cliffs, Kempty Falls is nestled at an altitude of around 4500 ft above the sea level. One of the most renowned waterfalls in Uttarakhand, Kempty Falls offers a mesmerizing panoramic view as the water falls from the mountains.

The name of Kempty Falls is taken from the terms "camp and tea" implying the elaborate tea parties that were once organized here in evenings eventually leading to a localized name Kempty. Offering a stunning view of water stream cascading down from a great height, it divides into five channels. The pond formed at the bottom of the falls make an excellent spot for swimming and bathing. A flight of stairs leads to the pond where one can soak in the fun with friends and family. Quite famous among the tourists as a picnic spot, this perennial waterfall is crowded almost throughout the year.

One of the best ways to explore the terrain of Kempty Falls is by the means of its ropeway. Precarious and thrilling at the same time, the ropeway takes you over lush green mountains and even overlooks waterbodies. Do take a ride on the ropeway if you wish to enjoy a bird's eye view of the Dehradun - Mussourie trail. The best time to visit Kempty Falls is during the summer season i.e. between the months of March and June when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities


Gun Hill
The Gun Hill is the second highest peak in Mussoorie after the Lal Tibba. Nestled 400 ft above The Mall, the Hill can be reached via cable car ropeway. The ropeway ride gives an enthralling experience to its passenger. The Peak offers stunning views of the snow-capped mountains. One gets to witness a top view of Mussoorie and Doon Valley.

It has a water reservoir built which supplies water to the hill area. Every picture shot here appears to be perfect.


Cloud's End
6 km west off the Library, the Cloud's end marks the end of Mussoorie. It is covered by thick jungles and tracks 2 km up to the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary. It offers a lovely walking track. This place offers a great view of Aglar River Valley.


Paragliding and Trekking
Mussoorie's is a good place for adventure Sports like paragliding as well. There are some trekking opportunities also available here.
